What does a Dental Hygienist do?

Our Dental Hygienist works very closely with the dentists to ensure that your gums are kept healthy. This is done through a combination of regular scaling and polishing with continual education and coaching so that you can do a better job at home.

Why is it important that I see the Hygienist?

Without healthy gums, teeth become mobile and more susceptible to decay. Your gums are the foundation of healthy teeth. Keeping your gums healthy is as major factor in keeping your teeth for your whole life. The hygienist will remove build ups of plaque and calculus on your teeth, they will teach you how to stop it coming back again and discuss how diet can help slow down the effects of gum disease.

Why doesn’t the dentist clean my teeth?

Some dentists will provide a scale and polish, but our dentists at Andrew House Dental Practice understand that a hygienist has been specially trained to provide the service.

Tooth Fillings, Restorations, Crowns, Inlays & Veneers | Andrew House Dental Tonbridge | Dental Practice Tonbridge | Cosmetic Dental Services

A filling is the possibly the smallest of the restorations we provide. You can choose to have either a silver (amalgam) filling or a white (composite) filling. Your Dentist will discuss the best materials to use depending on the cosmetic effect you desire and what they feel is going to provide the best result going forward.

If you have a large hole in a tooth a filling may not be suitable, you may need an inlay. An inlay can be made from a white material which is similar to Porcelain or it can be made in Gold. The inlay is made to the exact shape of the hole you have in your tooth, rather like a jigsaw piece, it is glued in place. It is a very long lasting strong solution for most large holes caused by decay.

A crown may a suitable solution when the tooth is broken down .A crown is similar to a jacket like covering which fits over the tooth and is glued into place. Just like an inlay, the tooth will need to be prepared by the dentist to ensure the crown is the best possible fit. Crowns are made of a variety of different materials including gold and porcelain. Your dentist will discuss all your options before deciding which is best for you.

Some patients like to change the shape or colour of their teeth for cosmetic effect. Your Dentist can discuss the options with you and a veneer may be suitable. This treatment has been popularised by celebrities, they are mostly used on the front teeth to create a beautiful smile.

Dental Implants, Bridges & Dentures

After you’ve had a tooth extracted we desire to get you back to having a beautiful fully functioning smile. There are several ways you may want to fill the gap left by an extraction;
Dental implants; a bridge or a denture.

Dental Implants

Once you’ve had an extraction you may be a suitable candidate to have an implant. An implant looks and behaves just like a natural tooth and is a permanent solution. Most importantly, unlike a bridge, it doesn’t damage any surrounding teeth. We refer our Patients for the placement phase of the process and we complete the final stages. Please keep an eye on our News page as we are looking to expand our services in the future.

This is the traditional way of replacing a missing tooth. For a bridge to be fitted it requires treatment to the adjacent teeth or tooth. These are the teeth that are used to support a permanent false tooth across the gap. Bridges have been developed a great deal in recent years, the modern materials used provide strength and aesthetics to make the finished result very natural.

Dentures – with or without implant retention
A denture is a device used to replace missing teeth, it is a removable device. A Denture can be used to replace just a few teeth or a full arch. You can have a Denture made of various different materials, these offer different levels of comfort for the patient. Over time a denture can become, as patients describe it, “sloppy”. There are several solutions to this and one permanent solution is the fix it in place with implants. This means the denture is still removable but can held firmly in place with attachments to several implants. Patients often like this solution as it is a simple and cost effective solution to something they may have been suffering with for some time.

An extraction is always the last resort,
Unfortunately it is sometimes necessary, your dentist will always discuss your options with you first.

Your Dentist will normally extract a tooth for you, this is dependent on the circumstances. In some instances you could be referred to an oral surgeon for the procedure. Before your procedure your Dentist will talk to you about how to restore the gap left by the extraction. There can be several options and it’s very important that you understand what they are, this will help ensure you choose the best option for you. We can use educational slides and models which can aid your decision making.
